Large fire breaks out at Narragansett home

Firefighters from several communities are trying to control a large fire at a home along Ocean Road in Narragansett Monday night.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. at 252 Ocean Road.

According to tax records the home is owned by the Skeffington family.

The name may be familiar, as the late Jim Skeffington, who died last year briefly owned the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Fire officials described the house as a two story structure with dimensions of 80 x 60.

Fire departments from Narragansett, South Kingstown and North Kingstown went immediately to defensive operations fighting the fire.

The strong winds from Hermine were making it difficult to fight the fire.

The town fire marshal says a woman was home earlier in the day and had left for the day Monday afternoon planning to return Tuesday.

She came back a little before 10 p.m. Monday and was talking to firefighters and neighbors and a man neighbors identified as a caretaker who first noticed the fire.

No word yet on how the fire started.

With the wind, there was some concern about the fire spreading to other homes.

That has not happened.
