Firefighters battle blaze at Narragansett waterfront home

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — Firefighters battled a house fire on waterfront property along wind-swept Ocean Road on Monday night.

Fire Capt. Peter Taylor said the fire was at 252 Ocean Rd. Town tax assessor records indicate the home is owned by James and Barbara Skeffington. James Skeffington was co-owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox before dying suddenly in May 2015.

The five-bedroom, five-bath house and surrounding two-acre property are assessed at $3.1 million.

The wind from the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine made controlling the fire difficult.

The Narragansett Fire Department said in a tweet that town firefighters received assistance from the North Kingstown Fire Department and Union Fire District in South Kingstown. North Kingstown Fire Department said in a tweet that high winds and “water problems” were a “major issue” in fighting the fire.

Firefighters went into defensive mode, according to Taylor meaning they were fighting the fire from outside the structure. WJAR-TV reported Monday night that no one was home when the fire was reported.
