MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Police in Middletown are investigating a car crash involving a moped-like vehicle.
According to police, the crash happened Wednesday afternoon in the area of West Main Road and Chase’s Lane. Police said a pickup truck traveling north was making a left-hand turn onto Chase’s Lane when it struck a scooter.
The operator of the scooter suffered head trauma and other significant injuries, according to police, and was transported to Newport Hospital.
According to fire officials, a medical flight was then arranged to transport him to Rhode Island Hospital.
The crash is under investigation. At this time, police say no charges have been filed.
Jim Quinn, who lives nearby, said he often rides a scooter and worries about the same type of crash happening.
“I think of that all the time. You have to be very, very cautious when you’re on the scooter because, for the most part, people are looking for a larger vehicle more so than a motorcycle. Or a scooter even smaller, moped even smaller than that,” he said.
