PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence Water issued an advisory over the weekend warning customers of the threat of con artists posing as employees of the utility.
Saturday’s advisory was prompted by a concerned homeowner’s call to the utility’s tip line that said someone had come to their door and acted as if they were a Providence Water employee.
A Providence Water spokesman tells WPRI-TV that this type of scam occurs from time to time and the utility wanted to be proactive in warning its customers.
The utility advises customers to always be cautious and ask for the proper identification from anyone presenting themselves as Providence Water employees.
The advisory went on to say that Providence Water only makes service visits when residents are home and would never ask customers to leave their doors unlocked.
