Firefighters aboard three boats extinguished flames that engulfed a boat in waters off Hog Island in Portsmouth Thursday afternoon, the Coast Guard said.
The boat fire was reported to the Coast Guard at about 3 p.m., according to a news release. A 45-foot response boat, says the release, arrived at the scene at 3:30 p.m., establishing a perimeter as fire boats from the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force handled the blaze.
No injuries were reported and local officials later verified that no one was aboard the vessel at the time of the fire, says the release.
The Coast Guard continues to inspect the scene for potential pollution and to ensure the safety of nearby mariners, says the release, which provides no information about what might have caused the fire.
