PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Vernon G. Massie, 49, of Cranston, pleaded guilty in federal court in Providence today, to violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
Massie failed to register in the state after moving to Cranston from Monroe, North Carolina, where he is a convicted and registered sex offender.
SORNA requires registered sex offenders to notify police of a change of address.
Massie was arrested in April at a hotel in Springfield, after fleeing Cranston following an alleged domestic violence incident against his fiance.
During the investigation, Cranston police discovered Massie had failed to alert North Carolina police that he had moved.
Massie also failed to register with Cranston Police.
Massie will be sentenced in October.
After he has completed his federal sentence, Massie will be turned over to Rhode Island to face domestic violence charges, and then to North Carolina to face charges of being a non-compliant sex offender.
